Our Mission

Member benefits include:   

• Exhibiting and selling works in local galleries and at the club's annual show and sale.

• Sharing of a spirit of learning with others in the organization.

• Celebrating the artistic accomplishment of Artists of the Month and the Artist of the Year.

• Expanding talents at occasional workshops that bring other professional artists to Sanford as instructors.

The club has enjoyed steady growth involving hundreds of artists since its founding in 1964 for residents of Sanford an surrounding Lee County. More than 120 persons now participate, bringing together first-time artists and those with well-known names. Many have works in private and corporate collections locally and several are among featured artist in galleries throughout the eastern United States.

During its long and important past, the Brush and Palette Club has sponsored numerous programs to meet the artistic interests of the community and to promote enthusiasm for fine arts. The club also sponsors workshops that bring accomplished artists to Sanford as instructors. Club members frequently work with educators in public and private schools to provide art instruction for children. In addition, several teach art at Central Carolina Community College that serves Chatham, Harnett and Lee Counties.

An annual club highlight is its selection of the Artist of the Year, chosen for creative talent and contributions to art appreciation. The artist is awarded a one-person show, among other accolades. The 2008 artist of the year is Sydney Somoza.

The 2008 Art Club Show was once again enjoyed by many folks who attended this annual show.

Here are some activities at the special event.

The Honorable Mayor of the City of Sanford, Cornelia Olive, was this year's master of ceremonies.

Craig Shore, Director of Lee County Arts Council, presented the awards for 1st, 2nd, and Best in Show. These top awards are funded by a grant through the Lee County Arts Council.

The Club had their first public mural on display at the annual show. The mural was designed by artist, Karen Tatum and painted by the children and adults of Lee County during the 2nd annual Artober fest in downtown Sanford.

John Wicker was honored for his long-time achievements and contribution to the cultural arts with a plaque, cheers, and applause.
