First Annual Gospel Fest

Gospel choirs and soloists from throughout central North Carolina will gather for a free, public Gospel Fest Friday, March 27, a the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center in Sanford.

Among performers will be the youth chorus, Abraham's Seed, and soloist Shaylena Wood. "We have just two time slots still open," said Jennifer Starkey, music director of the event. "Our program has filled quickly since we announced we'd be having the Gospel Fest. It's a first come, first served activity now."

Starkey, a local music teacher and manager/founder of the Star Community Theatre, first envisioned a festival of this kind when she heard numerous choirs perform. "This area is particularly rich with wonderful singers," she said. "I know many folks will be thrilled by their music. This concert simply celebrates good gospel music and the talent. It's not part of any religious service."

The event is a family-friendly one sponsored by the Lee County Arts Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the arts to the people and people to the arts. Starkey is a board member. Choirs interested in participating in the festival may contact Starkey at 718-5283, the soloist Shaylena Wood at 775-7351, or the Arts Council office at 774-6139.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. concert at the Civic Center, 1801 Nash Street, Sanford. Parking is adjacent to the facility.

"We're calling this our "first annual Gospel Fist," Starkey said. "I'm confident it will be a night to remember."
